What killed Tolkien's chances at a Nobel Prize in 1961?

Image
When you think about JRR Tolkien, author to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, being nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1961, you'd hardly believe that he was passed up for this great honor. Furthermore, you would certainly not believe the reason that he was set aside by the panel of jurors.

It is the policy of the Nobel committee to keep their decision making process a complete secret for 50 years after the prize has been awarded. After the 50 year period the records are made public in the Nobel library in Stockholm, Sweden. A Swedish reporter by the name of Andreas Ekström took the opportunity to look into the 1961 classified documents and discovered that there were many very talented authors passed up that year including Lawrence Durrell, Robert Frost, Graham Greene, EM Forster and Tolkien. When the decision was made final Yugoslavian writer Ivo Andrić emerged victorious with the Nobel Prize in Literature.

So what possible reason could the jurors come up with …

Amy Pond's death on Doctor Who is all but official

Image
*This article contains quotes from the actors and Executive Producer of the show. Everything else is speculation.

The clues have all been there for a long time and I have personally been calling this outcome for quite a while. It appears as though our beloved time-traveling companion to the Doctor on the British sci-fi show Doctor Who may die in the coming season. (Calm down, we are still at least another 9 months away from the next season. Wait... that sucks too! What is going on with this show?!)

In a recent interview, Gillan spoke about how if her character, Amy Pond, was to die on the show she would want it to be a permanent death. She wouldn't want the possibility of coming back or having an alternate Amy pop up. Not soon after Executive Producer, Steven Moffat had come forward and stated that, "The final days of the Ponds are coming," Moffat said. "I'm not telling you when or how, but that story is going to come to a heartbreaking end." As if the sh…

Batman enters Seuss-Land

Image
There have been many crossovers into the zany land of Dr. Seuss but it seems that these great pieces of fan art never get old. This time the caped crusader, Batman, is taking a stroll through the land of Dr. Seuss and he brought his closest ... 'friends' with him. These art pieces were created by DeviantArt user, DrFaustusAU.

A fan came up with the following Seuss poem to accompany the images:

Find the bad guys
And knock them all flat,
I’m happiest
When dressed as a bat.
I’m not sorry
For the life I’ve led,
Because, you see,
My parents are dead!

The Hunger Games releases new photos!

Image
New photos have been released by Lionsgate for their upcoming movie The Hunger Games. I am personally in the middle of reading the book but from what I have read and seen in these photos/trailer, it really looks like they are doing a great job on the adaptation of this book. The Hunger Games is set to be one of the big anticipated films of 2012.

Movie Synopsis:
Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains. Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernat…
