Meet Disney's first ever latina princess - Princess Elena of Avalor!

For the first time in Disney's history there will be an official latina princess! Let me introduce you to Princess Elena of Avalor!

It was announced by Disney Junior that during a special episode of the show Sophia the First in 2016, Princess Elena will make her debut to the world. For those not aware, Sophia the First is a very popular cartoon show for preschoolers.

The new princess is being described as, ""bold, caring, funny and clever… a confident and compassionate teenager in an enchanted fairytale kingdom inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore.""

The introduction on Sophia the First will serve as a stepping stone to a new spin-off series staring the new latina princess that will debut on Disney Junior in 2016. Voicing Elena will be actress Aimee Carrero from ABC Family's Young & Hungry.

Elena's story is tied to a magical amulet that Sophia found. Elena is trapped inside of the amulet and was put there by an evil sorceress, Shuriki, who took Elena's parents and kingdom from her. It is up to Sophia to return her to human form and help her get back to Avalor.
