It's inevitable that at some point in a video game the gamer strays off the game's path to screw around or explore a little. These periods of exploration can sometimes be rewarded but there are some games that punish the player for straying from the course.

Attack a cucco in The Legend of Zelda too many times and an angry flock of them will fly to you and relentlessly attack you. In Deus Ex: Human Revolution if you take too long to rescue a hostage you are tasked to save, they are killed and you are blamed for your incompetence.
